Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is an infection caused by a coronavirus called Feline Coronavirus (FCoV). There are two main forms of FIP:

Wet form FIP:

  • The wet form of FIP usually causes more damage more quickly than the dry form.
  • Symptoms include abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup (pleurisy), fever, weight loss, lethargy and fatigue.
  • This form usually leads to rapid death, usually within one to two weeks after symptoms appear.

Dry form FIP:

  • The dry form of FIP usually causes slower deterioration and can last for weeks or even months.
  • Symptoms include swelling of various parts of the body such as the liver, kidneys, blood vessels and brain infections.
  • Other symptoms may include weight loss, fever, fatigue, and changes in your cat's behavior or mood.
  • This form often leads to death after a fairly long period of time, and can cause rapid loss of health and weakness.

Besides the two main forms of FIP, dry FIP and wet FIP, there is also another form of the disease called neurologic FIP or neurologically associated FIP.

Neurologic FIP is a variant of FIP that directly affects the cat's nervous system. Symptoms of neurological FIP may include:

  1. Behavioral abnormalities: Cats may show signs such as changes in behavior, such as suicidal behavior or neurological damage such as tremors and seizures.
  2. Movement disorders: Cats may have difficulty walking, procrastinate or become lost.
  3. Central nervous system disorders: Symptoms related to the central nervous system include receding head angle, inactivity, or weight loss.

But it should be noted that neurological FIP is a rare variant of FIP and is often a more serious variant, with a high mortality prognosis. This makes diagnosis and treatment more difficult.

When cats have Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), especially during the more severe stages of the disease, maintaining a healthy diet is important to support their health and strengthen their immune system.

Here are some things to keep in mind about nutrition for cats with FIP:

  1. Provide foods that are easily absorbed: Choose foods that are easily digested and absorbed. Wet foods may be a good choice, as they often contain more water, which helps reduce the risk of dehydration due to fever or other symptoms.
  2. Protein-rich food: Provide your cat with protein-rich food to support recovery and strengthen the immune system. Protein-rich foods from animal or plant sources can be used.
  3. Provide adequate water: Make sure your cat always has clean, fresh water to drink. Cats with FIP can become dehydrated quickly through fever and dehydration through infection.
  4. High-energy foods: Cats with FIP may lose weight rapidly due to loss of appetite and increased energy consumption as the body fights the disease. Providing high-energy food can help maintain your cat's nutritional status.
  5. Divide food into small portions: If your cat cannot eat large amounts of food at one time, provide several small meals throughout the day to ensure your cat consumes enough nutrients and energy.

In general, FIP is a serious infection and there is no definitively effective treatment or prevention. For cats that have been diagnosed with FIP, it is important to provide supportive and comfort care during the course of the disease and optimize their quality of life.
